    CORRESPONDENCE ITEMS:

Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2007 07:45:00 PM CST
    From: ncolber@comcast.net

Subject: history of Fireside Radio Network 1970-1973

Good Evening, Mr Bellairs. My name is Norm Colbert and I served in the USAF
as an air to ground radio operator(AFSC29353) from 1969 to 1973. After
graduating with honors from radio school at Keesler AFB, Ms I was sent to Mt
Home AFB for the remainder of my enlistment and received an honorable
discharge. My fellow radio operator David Hirschfield now living in
Westminster, Ca was our MARS radio operator. We were in the 2036th Comm Sq at
Mt Home AFB, Idaho. I worked in a receiver site on base and operated Fireside
Four secretly. I was President Nixon's personal communicator for Comm Region
6 for almost 3 years. I had a hotline to the White House that I answered
occasionally and communicated the President's commands to begin or in some
cases to end operations in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. I began doing this in
May 1970 and gave directions and received reports from the aircraft
    commanders
bombing Cambodia secretly. The ! OSI req uired me several times to debrief
and make blood oaths of loyalty to the President which I was proud to do.
Many times I spoke to doomed pilots as they died during the war. I would then
have to contact their Wing Commanders and inform them of their loss. This was
very emotional. I used KWT-6 Collins HF radios and had KWM-2a HF backup
radios with linear amplifiers. I used a log periodic antenna that was fully
rotatable and could tilt up or down. I had global reach. My work jamming
Hanoi Hannah earned my squadron a Presidential Unit Citation. I received 2
Personal Presidential Commendations also. One for directing the US Navy to
the site of a downed EC-121 aircraft in the waters off Vietnam rescuing a
General Grade Officer and nine others aboard via submarine. The second for
timely and accurately sending the launch order for Linebacker 2 the
    resumption
of the bombing campaign over Hanoi and Haiphong by over 450 ! aircraf t
causing the North Vietnamese to return to the peace table in Paris.
    Sincerely, Norm Colbert
