The previous trustee for W2AIR, John Zantek, K3JZ, had succeeded in his
shopping around to find a suitable home for the station license.
Working contacts from his days in the Coast Guard (including a ranking
officer in telecommunications still on active duty), he was able to pass
the word among Coast Guard communicators that a suitable home for W2AIR
was desired. The Communications Area Master Station Pacific (CAMSPAC,
callsign NMC) in Point Reyes, California, and Petty Officer Ian
Thurston, WA6ODQ, stepped forward to assume trusteeship for W2AIR. As
you can see from the entry above, the license was renewed in the 11th
month after expiration, just barely in time to keep it the original,
Military Recreation license with the same callsign and with no renewal
fee.
Petty Officer Thurston says that they hope to set up a permanent station
shortly, somehow finding off-duty time between site projects, including
a major upgrade for NMC.
It is certainly good news that an amateur radio asset like W2AIR
continues, and in its originally-intended form. I will keep the SACMARC
mailing list informed about any further updates at W2AIR.
73, Paul, K3FU
