Yes, that's the plan. As we plan to have one station this year, and
have used the K0AIR call for our one station last year, let's use the
K0GRL call this year (I know this gives us fewer bonus points to give
out, but it's a minor compromise for the sake of keeping both calls
active).
Although we plan to operate for this event, this operation is contingent
on manpower. At a minimum, I would like to see at least three
volunteers available at all times, one of which is General class or
higher (such that there is always a properly licensed control operator
supervising the operation at all times). The station site is at the SAC
Museum in Ashland, as we did last year.
I can be available for a 3:30 PM Friday afternoon setup. I would
require at least one other person, preferably two (in a pinch, one of
the maintenance people at the Museum would cheerfully pitch in). We
will operate during Museum hours on Saturday and Sunday, September 16th
and 17th from approximately 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. I will not be available
Sunday morning because I will be participating in that morning's 10K
"Corporate Cup" road race in downtown Omaha, as I do every year.
Right now, we have my radio (an Icom 706MKII), John's tape dipole and
fiberglass mast with guy ropes, and whips for 10, 6, and 2 meters and 70
cm. I will arrange with John to pick up his loaned items before the
event. We will need the following:
- Another HF antenna and tower
- Another HF radio
- RG-8 or similar style 50 Ohm coaxial cable with PL-259 connectors
(100 foot runs desirable)
- a VHF/UHF radio (at least FM)
- at least one (preferably two) laptop computers with LogEQF installed
Plans for more ambitious visual aids unfortunately did not pan out due
to limited manpower and volunteer interest (as well as other
obligations). I will get with George before the event to obtain club
documents from the safe deposit box for our usual minimal display. We
will, however, try to better coordinate our greeters, with our volunteer
greeter coordinator Sonya Fitzgerald.
Please check your calendars, think about your availability, and let me
know by Friday, September 8th. Please let me know specifically what
days and times (a limited number of people wishing to work specific
partial shifts for a few hours, or who would like to be "floaters," can
be accommodated, but I also need coverage as well). I will also see to
asking our past volunteers who do not have E-mail access.
If it turns out that we cannot cover this event, I will try to let
Museum officials know by Monday at the latest. That would be an
unfortunate result for our planning efforts, but if we don't have the
volunteer interest, I can't squeeze blood out of a turnip.
Alternatives for future AF QSO Parties might include a rotating
operation (assuming it was consistent with the rules) where we operate
from home stations in shifts. Even if stations have to be fixed to be
consistent with the spirit of the rules, we can use different calls at
each site. Past efforts to coordinate this have not panned out,
however.
So again, think about it, and let me know about your definite
availability by Friday at the latest.
