It was somewhat overshadowed by the airshow this weekend, but there was
an outstanding set of events for SAC Communicators for their reunion
this year, organized by Retired Colonel Mick Bloom. Colonel Bloom also
introduced me to the group and talked up my proposed exhibit project to
the membership to the membership. Friday night was a buffet and
night-time exclusive tour of the SAC Museum in Ashland, followed by a
banquet at the Officer's Club on Saturday. The guest speaker at the
banquet was Jim McCoy (Yes, that name should be familiar to you. I had a
vague glimmer of recognition myself of the name of this
distinguished-looking, friendly gentleman whom everyone was congregating
around and calling "Chief." I'm grateful to Greg Hulla who clued me in
and told me that he was a former SAC Senior Enlisted Advisor and Chief
Master Sergeant of the Air Force. Chief McCoy also sits on the SAC
Museum board and talked up the Museum and its future plans during his
speech. I didn't buttonhole him too much, just joined everyone else in
shaking his hand and saying it was an honor to meet a former CMSAF. He
good-naturedly noted that I joined the Air Force 6 years after he
retired).
I met quite a few SAC Communicators, including present or former hams
who came up to talk to me about HF history within SAC and some of their
roles within it. Some of them with E-mail addresses I added, with their
permission, to our club mailing list. They are:
Walt Giles, N5SUW, N5SUW@juno.com
Gregory G. Hulla, Gregory.G.Hulla@cpmx.saic.com
Ron Patton, rpatton@wpgate1.wpafb.af.mil
Frank Rodeffer, KI7BJ, rodeffer@utw.com
I've sent them the past month's traffic on this mailing list (be assured
that it isn't a day's worth).
This weekend, I hope to finish my short letter to SAC Museum Director
Wayne Schmidt thanking him his time over the phone in trying to squeeze
the September 1998 AF Anniversary QSO Party into the event schedule,
asking him to reserve September 18th and 19th, 1999 for next year's QSO
Party, letting him know that I found a lot of good leads and enthusiasm
among SAC Communicators for our proposed exhibit project, and that I'd
be happy to talk to him and Sarah McFarland at any time to discuss this
in more detail.
