Subject: SAC History
Dear Mr. Schleck:
I found your site while researcing an SAC-related project I'm working
on. My topic is somwhat off-subject from what you are doing, but
perhaps you could point me in the right direction.
In 1962-3-4, the SAC held a series of sports car races on its bases.
Gen LeMay was a sports car enthusiasts and entered his own cars in some
of these races, sometimes with SAC personnel as drivers.
The stated purpose of these events was to benefit the Airman's Fund at
each base. With attendance at some of these events over 100,000, there
was quite a bit of money around. Congress evidently did not approve of
how this money was being spent, held hearings and the program was
scrapped in 1955.
I am looking for information concerning these hearings. I have made a
similar request to the staff of the SAC Museum in Omaha, but I thought
your project would have you in touch with several people with a detailed
knowledge of SAC history.
If you have any thoughts on someone I should contact, I would appreciate
it.
Many thanks,
Michael T. Lynch
