Plea for B-29 Event Volunteers and Equipment

Sorry for the delay on this one. Had some trouble reaching the Freemans
(who are the contacts for the B-29 team) and wanted to make sure we had
the most important permission of all, that of those responsible for the
plane itself.

Bob and Mildred Freeman gave their consent for us to operate at the
static display. We have not explicitly heard back from General
Urschler, but John says that he was in support of it, only wished to
be informed of our intentions anyway, and should be able to ensure our
presence at the static display at Eppley.

Because this was so last-minute, and requiring a lot of action items (a
lot of which didn't occur to me, thanks multiple times over, John), I
have done a lot of delegating to free me up for managing the high-level
planning both for the B-29 event, and for the charter meeting of the
club that week. Hope no one was offended if I asked an individual who
suggested an idea to run with it.

Here's what I've done so far:

- Contacted, and heard back from, the Freemans
- Asked John to follow up with General Urschler (accomplished)
- Sent E-mail to the individuals who did the last B-29 operating event
(WD4KTI and KD4SFF) for general advice, particularly with regard to
antennas and radios (their E-mail addresses are in the article starting
on Page 40 in April QST), awaiting reply
- Accepted Roy Gertig's offer (backed by a suggestion by John) to
contact Eppley and work out any approval issues, especially with regard
to radio frequency problems (RFI, etc.), awaiting reply
- Asked Ray McNally to look into banner design based on suggestion by
him that we make up a simple one, and have Kinko's laminate it for
$2/foot, awaiting reply
- Based on query from John Sheffield about publicity (he's the ARRL PIO)
asked him to look into making a press release, contacting media,
possibly making some press briefing notes for us to review so we don't
put our feet in our mouths, and possibly being there as an "official"
spokesperson for the club, awaiting reply
- Sent this latest request for volunteers.

Looks like this will be a couple of days, all day, June 24th to June
27th. Looking for people who can stay a day or half-day to ensure
continuous operation, or at least continuous safeguarding of equipment,
so we don't have to tear it down and reinstall it multiple times. If it
turns out we can support only one day, then I suppose we'll just support
one day. If we have some holes in the schedule, or people who can only
stay a short while, I suppose we'll deal with that also. I know many of
us have jobs and it would be difficult to find time off (myself
included), but I'd appreciate it if everyone could see what they could
do.

We have the generous loan of John's TS-50, possibly with an antenna
tuner. Unresolved equipment items include power source (batteries,
local mains power if available, don't know if generator would be
practical, or even allowed), and antennas (need ones that will work in
compact space, such as a whip, random wire, or small dipole; not sure
what kind of support structures we'll have for antennas). If you have
these items, and can spare them (preferably with some personal on-site
installation expertise) please let me know. In addition to
communications-specific items, things like tables, chairs, tarps (might
rain), etc., will be needed. Would also be nice if we had some ARRL
literature to hand out, also.

I'll pick up an ARRL logbook from Mr. Ladd so that we can document our
contacts (possibly for later exchange of QSL cards; John recommended,
and I agree, that we should order QSL cards only after we know how many
contacts we had, and probably ask for an SASE).

So, if you can operate those days, or have needed equipment you can
spare (I also wouldn't mind seeing if we could run some data modes, and
possibly VHF/UHF, if practical), please let me know as soon as
possible. If you have additional concerns or suggestions about the
operation, please let me also know as soon as possible (with the
understanding that I'll probably empower you to carry them out).

73, Paul, K3FU
